Lets pay tribute to the cast - those that give their time freely to entertain the audience. They do it year on year and believe me it's hard work learning the lines. Why do they do it? - It's because they enjoy putting something into the village and what better way than some good old fashioned entertainment

It's also true to say that without the support of the village it would be nothing - It seems unique that a place the size of Portgordon can put on a show of this kind time and time again

Christine Crammond does a fantastic job in writing, producing and directing the Panto each year, something she does rather well, I think we all agree on that

The Gurkha Plaque is located on the north breakwater

Whilst Portgordon Community Harbour Group was formed to regenerate the harbour it also seeks to make improvements to the area. These are some examples:

As well as being practical, useful or simply cosmetic these features show visitors that the harbour area is not neglected and we hope they add value to the village...

The Gurkha Plaque

The Gurkhas arrived in the village in 1985 and began the job of repairing the harbour.This was the first of three visits in the eighties. On completion of the works the Gurkha's left a commemorative Plaque on the north breakwater to mark their works

The Plaque is no longer accessible to the public due to the poor state of repair of the link bridge

Portgordon Community Harbour Group has deliberated about this and feels that there should be more obvious recognition of the Gurkha's work, particularly for the benefit of the passing public, many of whom are walking the Speyside Way which takes them alongside the harbour

Here is a proposal put to the (PCHG) committee at their last meeting (26th September 2011)

Gurkha Plaque

Introduction/Preamble

The existing Plaque commemorating the Gurkha's part in Portgordon harbours history is looking worse for wear due to the combined effects of ¹corrosion and weathering. In addition it’s placement on the north breakwater is some distance from the walking route past the harbour and as a consequence is not seen by the passing public. This means it is likely that many people may be oblivious of the part the soldiers played in saving the harbour and paving the way toward regeneration for the community. We (PCHG) really should do something about this.

Proposal

A replica plaque be purchased and placed in a more prominent position, for example the north face of the wall at the head of the slipway (next to the notice board)

Funding options

Harbour Group Funds

Full cost of purchase and placement met by Portgordon Community Harbour Group Ltd

Sponsorship

Find a suitable sponsor to meet the full cost of purchase and placement

Donations

Request donations from members of the public to cover the full cost of purchase and placement (see note 2)

Conclusion

Whilst the above may appear to be fairly straightforward there are possible challenges to this, assuming the committee agrees it should be done in the first place

Planning permission/consent – is it needed from the crown or local authority?

How do we get a plaque cast?

Would it offend the generation that were involved in the original placement?

Note (1) The existing plaque to remain where it is and given suitable treatment to prevent further corrosion, if possible

Note (2) Donations of a fixed sum (£5 cheque only) be requested from members of the public to meet the full costs of purchase and placement. A dedicated page would be created on the PCHG website featuring a ‘virtual stone wall’ with an impression of the plaque fixed on the wall. The idea being that anyone donating £5 would have their name added to a block on the virtual wall and this would be there for the life of the website

The meeting supported the proposals and a committee member is looking to progress matters with regards to costs and funding - There is no completion date for this, though it is anticipated it will be before year end. However, a more detailed submission will be placed before the committee when costs, funding and the required works are determined

RAF Search & Rescue

One of the nice things about Gala Day is the support that we receive from the coastal emergency services like, Search & Rescue, the RNLI and Coastguard. Although the RAF Search & Rescue are national rather than coastal they are nonetheless always asked to visit us on Gala Day. Some would say it isn't the same if they don't put in an appearance. Of course their arrival depends very much on availability. If they are dealing with an emergency then they cannot turn up and we all understand that. Old and young certainly enjoy seeing the helicopter - You never know, maybe some of the youngsters watching will be inspired to join the RAF as a result of their day out at Portgordon

The big yellow bird (as it's fondly known) is a formidable aircraft - it's got everything, and if you add to that the finest aircrew in the world. You have something very special - so you can imagine how welcome this helicopter is when someone is in distress

'HMS HUNG OAR'

Worthy winners of a great race beating last years winners, 'Buckie Fire Fighters' into second place. They took the lead early on and despite a valiant effort by the firefighters they held on to claim a well deserved victory. Great bunch of guys and they really enjoyed winning

'PORT SCRUBBERS'

Team 'PORT SCRUBBERS' won the Trophy for 'Best Raft' for the second year running. Apart from giving the crowd some super entertainment the girls in this team also claimed a very creditable third place. Amid all the fun and frolics these are serious contenders - Will they win next time? Have to wait and see. One things for sure, they'll be trying their hardest and the crowd are always behind them

If determination won prizes then these girls would be in the top tier. They never gave up and warmed the crowd with their spirited efforts in this, their first raft race at Portgordon - We all very much hope they return next year

The Firefighters never gave up. You wouldn't expect them to. It's not in their nature. They gave it their best shot and despite not winning they were as always a credit to Grampian Fire & Rescue Service

Another debut team and full of spirit - I wouldn't bet against them next year. A few design problems with the raft seemed to have scuppered their hopes but they will live to fight another day

This is 'TEAM MARINE'

Bit of a surprise as following their debut last year it was considered this team would provide a serious challenge. One for the future I think. Great bunch though

The old saying "it isn't about winning" may well be appropriate in some quarters but try telling these racers that. They all came to have some fun and also do their very best to win. Without a doubt they provided fantastic entertainment for an appreciative crowd and they'll all have the memory of this day of days for a long, long time

It's a great day for the kids as they put on the fancy dress that's probably taken weeks to prepare and then after the excitement of the competition there's the Parade following the Pipe Band from the village Hall to the Arena

I say this every time - make sure you have your cameras at the ready to capture moments you will treasure for years

We have increased our capacity on the main website to allow more photographic content, even so we have to be careful because photo's are so memory hungry there is a limit to what can be put on. We get around this in part by reducing the size and quality of the images. There was some disappointment last year when the joint exercise didn't take place due the the Sea King being unavailable due to an emergency, although the crew were kind enough to do a fly-by on the way back to base - The lifeboat came as planned and played it's part in what was described as the best Gala yet - we were helped by having fine weather. Lets hope for more of the same this year

Always a great crowd pleaser - A crew from Buckie Fire Station won last year and as a result the Firefighters Benevolent Fund was richer by £100 - will they be back to defend their title this year - you'll have to wait and see

it's not just about winning though as taking part is a way of having some fun with friends and of course there's the challenge of making a raft - just the thing to be doing on these lighter evenings

All over for another year. The response from visitors has been tremendous. The weather just about held off and after last years disappointment, when the event had to be cancelled at the eleventh hour, this was a spectacular event.

It brings visitors to Portgordon and the hope is they go away with wonderful memories of this fine village

PRESS RELEASE – PORTGORDON FIREWORKS DISPLAY 2010

REMEMBER: Portgordon Fireworks to brighten the sky on Friday 29TH OCTOBER

Portgordon Fireworks annual spectacular is to be held earlier this year on Friday 29th October at 7pm. Buckie District Pipe Band will lead up to the 7.15pm start of the 25-30 minute duration of the firework display.
It will also include a specialised pyrotechnic Finale to be carried out by Fireworx Scotland from Inverurie. The finale has partially been sponsored by Garry & Alison Farquhar, from Aberdeen.
The annual display is normally held the week before or after other larger displays such as Banff, Elgin & Forres and the organisers have to plan this event around the tides and any Halloween events so are really hoping for good weather.
As we had to cancel last year’s event due to extreme weather conditions, we have made provision this year that should the event have to be postponed it will be held the following evening of Saturday 30th October 2010 following the same timetable.
It is essential that the large numbers of spectators are well catered for and Portgordon Fireworks Committee certainly do their utmost to make the event so special for the small village and the surrounding area. With various stalls selling glow rings & flashing necklaces, the bottle stall, burger kiosk, teas & coffees and the Funfair ensuring there is something for everyone.
There will be parking for approximately thirty cars in the special Disabled Parking area which allows for access to the spectator area and the funfair but also provides really good comfortable viewing of the display.
Fireworks are even more expensive with a big increase over last year and the organisers will be hoping for really good collections in the collecting buckets and hope all the spectators and those viewing from their cars will dig deep into their wallets to help cover the costs of the event. The cost of hire of barriers, the Red Cross and various other extras to be paid for.
We are very grateful to Springfield Properties (Elgin) for the loan of fencing for Disabled Parking and around the site.
In order to ease congestion Maynes Coaches of Buckie have donated and will operate a Park & Ride scheme leaving from the Buckie Drifter car park at 6.30pm then Cluny Square at 6.35pm, Land Street at 6.40pm and finally Great Western Court at 6.45pm. After the display Grand Finale a coach will make a return trip leaving at approximately 8pm from Flicks Hairdressers. A fare of only 50p each way is required.
Please Note: there are no toilet facilities on site and we hope you will be comfortable for the display duration.

Remember to wait for the spectacular finale!!

As usual we recommend that pets are kept inside from 7pm till approximately 8pm on the night of our event.

Children should be accompanied by an adult.

No other fireworks including sparklers, bikes or skateboards will be allowed on site.

Please keep roads clear to allow for emergency vehicles other road users and service buses. Residents will be advised of any road closures & restrictions.

After the record month for July it's no surprise that visitor numbers have fallen this month even so the figures for August represent an increase of 43% over the same month last year and if you look at the graph you can see how continuous growth in viewing numbers over the months and years has occurred.

Visits or Hits - What's the difference?

A hit is when a server is called as a result of a search engine enquiry. For example if you type in 'Portgordon' on 'Googles' search engine today you will see about 19,300 sites that are available. This enquiry will be counted as a hit on the listed websites including ours - it is only when a link is clicked and the website opened that the hit changes to a visit. The visitor may then look at one page or several - it still counts as a single visit

Hope that explains the difference between visits and hits. I've shown this to Mrs Blog and she says it's as clear as mud!

It could easily be used as a platform of discovery for several Sunday afternoon car drives. It takes you to places you may well know but beneath the surface there are some hidden treasures - all part of the local heritage

The highlight of their day will be the Parade from the Village Hall to the Harbour when they will be led by Strathisla Pipe Band along with Mickey and Minnie Mouse

Make sure you bring your camera along to record this special day for the family album

RAF Search & Rescue will combine with the RNLI to provide a display you will remember for a long time

Last years display was something to behold. We've all seen this type of thing on television but to have it live and close to the shore has much greater visual impact than any television show

The Lifeboat crew are based at Buckie and the RAF crew are based at Lossiemouth

Charity Raft Race on Gala Day 25th July 2010

This year, for the first time, the Harbour Group has decided to make the annual Raft Race beneficial to others perhaps less fortunate than those taking part. The organisers will donate £100 to a registered charity nominated by the Raft Race winning team. Also, with charities in mind, the Group is encouraging all entrants to obtain sponsorship for their chosen charity. So what are you waiting for, come along and have a great day and help others in the process. It is not a requirement that you obtain sponsorship for any charity - feel free to do as you wish.

A Tiger Moth is coming to Gala Day

After two years of trying we are very hopeful the Tiger Moth will be able to do a fly-past. Serviceability and poor weather have combined to prevent it happening previously but this year we are due a decent day - Let's hope so anyway for this aircraft is unique and in it's day was at the forefront of aviation technology - some would say it still is!

Aprils figure of 1376 is a record for that month. The site continues to grow in popularity - it's good that it does. It's also challenging because looking for new content is quite demanding

The Blog is considered to be one of the more welcome assets on the site because it's published monthly. I enjoy doing it and the freedom the group give me in it's production is good. I can say pretty much what I think without any censorship. I do ask you to ignore the spelling and grammar errors that I do my best to avoid, but do creep in from time to time

Any budding actors out there?

I hear that a Pantomime is on the cards for the end of the year - now that's good news for the village. I'll try to find out more - watch this space

These events are a necessary formality in any Groups calendar and are often considered boring - What I will say is I have attended many similar meetings in the past with various organsiations and I know they can get a bit tedious but, maybe I'm biased, this one will get to the point and will most of all will be an opportunity for those attending to get the true picture and a real feeling for what is happening with the Harbour Regeneration Project - so it certainly will not be boring

Only thing we can't control is the weather although we do guarantee a warm welcome.

You may have read in the official 'Blog' that the group did consider making this a two day event but after some debate decided against it. The content is there it's just a question of resources, with manpower being the most critical

It's early days yet but plans are underway to provide something that will appeal to all ages

Remember the Dog Agility Display from last years Gala Day

I'm going to ask the Dog Training group to come along again this year. The dogs proved to be one of the most popular attractions. It was a first and one that the committee certainly want to repeat. I'll be getting in touch with the Group and will let you know how I go on.

At last nights Gala day meeting the date for this years Gala day was fixed and will be Sunday 25th July. The event will begin at 12 noon and end at 5.00pm
Many ideas were discussed at the meeting and it's all looking good so far
Last years event had far more content than any previous year and really the only disappointment was the weather even then the disappointment was short lived because our supporters turned up in force to make it a day worth remembering
We are certainly hoping to make this one the best ever
Please keep looking at the main site for more information regarding the day and also this site will feature 'snippets' of information leading up to the big day

Greatest Scot

In 2009, STV ran a televison series and public vote to decide who should be named as being the Greatest Scot. On St Andrew's day, STV revealed the results of the public vote, and Robert Burns was voted as being officially the Greatest Scot of all time, narrowly beating William Wallace, Scottish Patriot and Independence campaigner, for the title.

This is a picture I've placed on the home page of the main website. I'm trying to generate interest by adding something different and hopefully of value to those of you with an interest in the village

Not sure of the exact date but the general feeling is it's about 1920

This picture of the entrance to the harbour basin was taken at high tide. I should have taken a shot from the same position at low tide so that you could see the difference, although if you are a local you will know that most of the time either side of high tides the harbour is dry and boat movements are therefore not possible.

The Group wants to change that situation and hope, in line with the business plan, to apply for funding in the near future to commence dredging

I'll give more detail when I can. In the meantime rest assured that progress is being made. I see first hand the efforts being made by individuals on behalf of the group and it reminds me why I'm part of it. I also know that the only time success comes before work is in the dictionary

I'm crossing my fingers as with three days to go including today it only needs 33 visitors each day and the targets reached

Note: the figures are only available after midnight on any given day so I can't update them other than on a once daily basis.

I do use a separate visitor counter on a couple of the web pages but this was only for evaluation purposes and it doesn't seem too reliable

As the year end approaches I'm hoping our visitor numbers will reach 14,000. Current total is 13,862 not including today. It's going to be touch and go

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
A high level of interest in the Regeneration Scheme is important to the Group and potential funders. It also helps with our sponsorship since our Sponsors name is clearly shown on the home page. Every visitor will see this and of course advertising pays - Just ask Coca Cola

WHAT AM I DOING
I'm working on the January 'Blog' in the hope of publishing it a few days early - Visitor numbers always increase at the beginning of the month when the 'Blog' is first placed on the site so that's my incentive

TOMORROW
I'll publish the figures on this 'Blog' each day until New Years Day - so you can see if we are going to reach the target - As I said in the opening paragraph it really will be touch and go

An early view of the harbour as a Steam Drifter approaches. What a magnificent sight. The Harbour Group Committee has allowed me to create a link to this 'Blog' and the website of Portgordon Heritage Group. Nice touch this and continues the Groups ethos of supporting other local organisations.

The website is a modest affair but is intended to show a wider audience how the village was many years ago.

Despite my belief yesterday that I wouldn't get the official 'Blog' finished in time I'm pleased to say I did and it's published on the website

This is despite the fact that I thought there were 31 days in November

You probably guessed the picture on yesterdays page is of a Gordon Highlander. If you got that you probably also know the connection with Portgordon is the man that founded the village also raised this famous regiment - Alexander 4th Duke of Gordon

December 'Blog'

I'm frantically working on the December 'Blog' to get it finished and on-line by the target date (1st Dec) it seems to me that as one door closes another one shuts!

Please bear with me if it's a few days late - I know it gives the website viewing figures a boost because the stats tell me the first few days of the month are when it gets the most views and it also tell me the 'Blog' page is the most popular

In the meantime here's a question for you: What regiment is represented by this picture and what is the connection with Portgordon? Answer will be given tomorrow

Regeneration - Phase one

More detail is now available on phase one of the harbour regeneration project.

Form a Trust Port (Legal fees & Scottish Government Fees)
Dredging (stage one = sampling)
Repairs to Structure (pointing to masonary)
Miscellaneous works (new bridge to outer pier, vertical ladders, life saving equipment, signage, deck furniture)
Civil works (breakout and renew inner pier surfacing)

You will appreciate the tangible elements of the above appear modest, however, they pave the way for phase two

All of this is dependent on the latest funding application being successful and therefore it is not at all possible to give a start date.

There are many views and opinions as to the best way to go about developing the project, the foremost being voiced is the harbour should be dredged before anything else is done. It is not that straightforward.

The scheme has been developed on engineering principles and will be project managed in line with regulatory standards.The foregoing represents major progress and the Group look forward to recieving support from all quarters as it pursues its stated aim of contributing to improving the village for all

Can You Spare One and a half Million Pounds?

Harbour Regeneration

This is a snapshot of the current position

Despite well meaning forecasts that the Group could obtain £1.5 million as a lump sum to regenerate the harbour, the reality is quite different and whilst it has made representations to numerous bodies with regards to funding, it feels the recent financial climate has not helped matters. The Group has therefore decided to adopt what it considers a more appropriate route and has embarked on this.

The Business Plan is constantly under review and because of its fluid design it can be used in such a way as to promote a more tactical approach to funding - this may be better explained as a phased approach.

The Group has now applied for funding to meet the proposals in line with phase one (of four) and will provide more information on the detail in due course.

In the meantime, if you do know anybody that could spare £1.5 million......???

The Railway Station and Harbour

This photograph was taken on the 13th April 1968 just a few weeks before the line closed forever

I think you will agree that this is a powerful picture and one that's sure to evoke memories of a time not too long ago when everything seemed so much better. Not only has the railway gone, the two buildings at the side of the harbour are no longer there.

If you look closely you can see the breach in the north wall of the harbour, thankfully repaired by the Gurkhas (69th Gurkha Independant Field Squadron) in the eighties.

I do know that this site is visited from many parts of the globe and I hope the picture reminds you of the place that perhaps was your home at one time.

Next chance I get I'll take a picture from the same viewpoint so that you can compare today with yesterday

I've recently come across a photograph of Portgordon railway station, dated 1968, showing the harbour in the background along with several buildings, close to the harbour, that are long gone.
The picture is sure to bring back memories to many of you
I'm currently negotiating with the copyright holder for permission to use his photograph on this site - watch this space!

If you read the November 'Blog' on the main website you will know that I intended to place pictures on this 'Blog' to let you see the apparent difference in the way the village name was portrayed on the railway station signs, have a look and see what you think - is it an optical illusion? - I don't think it is anyway it isn't intended to start a controversy, it's just that I find it an interesting subject

Once again you may ask "What's this got to do with the harbour" the answer is Nothing, though I could suggest if you had been standing on the station platform you would have had a nice view of the harbour - so that's near enough of a connection for me
